A commendable initiative under the leadership of Hon’ble Mayor Smt. Sushma Kharkwal, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation and Jal Kal Department

Lucknow: On Saturday, the desilting work of Kathauta and Bharwara Lakes, located in Gomtinagar, was formally inaugurated with traditional rituals by Hon’ble Mayor *Smt. Sushma Kharkwal*. This initiative is not only a landmark step in the direction of *water conservation*, but also a proactive measure to ease the *water crisis* often faced by residents during the summer months.

The event was graced by several dignitaries including *Deputy Leader of the Council Mr. Sushil Tiwari ‘Pammi’*, *Hon’ble Councilors Mr. Shailendra Verma, Mr. Arun Rai, and Mr. Sanjay Singh Rathore*, *Additional Municipal Commissioners Mr. Lalit Kumar and Mr. Pankaj Srivastava*, *General Manager Jal Kal Mr. Kuldeep Singh*, *Zonal Officer Mr. Sanjay Yadav*, *Chief Engineer Jal Kal Mr. Shameem Akhtar*, and *XEN Jal Kal Zone-4 Mr. Vikas Sharma*, along with other officers and staff from the Municipal Corporation and Jal Kal Department. The event was compered by *Mr. Sachin Yadav*, XEN Jal Kal.

*Enhanced Water Storage Capacity Through Desilting*

As per the directions of Mayor Smt. Sushma Kharkwal, the desilting work is being carried out swiftly. It has been informed that *Kathauta Lake spans approximately 1200 meters in length and 600 meters in width*. Nearly *5 lakh cubic meters of silt* will be removed from the lake, which will *increase its water storage capacity up to three times*. This will directly benefit thousands of residents in Gomtinagar and Indiranagar by improving summer water supply.

*Machine-Aided Cleaning and Sustainable Resource Utilization*

Special *dredging machines* are being used to clean the deeper areas of the lake. *Fifteen poclain machines* and *dumpers* are deployed to extract the silt efficiently. On this occasion, Hon’ble Mayor flagged off a *super sucker machine* as well. The excavated silt will not be discarded; instead, it will be utilized in ongoing construction activities in *Akbarnagar*, *Manoratha Gaushala*, and other projects by the Municipal Corporation and LDA—marking a sustainable use of resources*.

*Time-Bound Plan for Water Storage

Mayor Kharkwal emphasized that with the scheduled shutdown of the Sharda Canal on 17–18 Ma for cleaning purposes, it is crucial to store an adequate amount of water in the lakes beforehand. To this end, the lake filling process will commence from 25 April The Mayor has instructed all concerned departments to work in *strict coordination* and within *a defined timeline
